During the Second World War, Lyness on Hoy was home to the Royal Naval Base, HMS Proserpine. At its height more than 12,000 naval personnel, Wrens, and civilian workers were stationed here to service the fleet at Scapa Flow.

The air raid shelters built across the base, known at the time as air raid precaution (ARP) shelters, were intended to protect workers from bombing raids. This location, now part of the Scapa Flow Museum, shows the rough texture of its concrete shuttering.
