The searchlight(s) were positioned to illuminate Hoy Sound and the western entrance to Scapa Flow at night. This allowed the big 6-inch coastal guns at Ness Battery to visually acquire and track enemy vessels in darkness. Searchlights were always paired with coastal guns. They weren’t independent. The beam would “fix” a target so the rangefinder and Battery Observation Post (BOP) could direct the guns onto it.
